Whenever we learn something new, we have to try it several times to get it right. Changing our thinking is the same thing. At first it is a difficult process to change your thoughts. Meditation is a great way to sit quietly, putting your attention on the observation on your breathing instead of your mind. This allows thoughts to pass without focusing on them. Practicing positive thoughts can become a normal way of life. Being patient with yourself is the first step.
